GOODCamp Improvements for 2017

Overview

This document will highlight GOODCamp presented by GOODProjects in the summer of 2016. It will address the struggles GOODProjects had in running the camp for the most at-risk youth in Washington D.C. More importantly this document will highlight the structural changes being made to GOODCamp in 2017 to ensure a highly effective program, which will result in positive changes in youth development.

GOODCamp 2016: What Went Well

GOODCamp was created in to combat the spike in gun violence in the Anacostia region in the summer of 2015, using athletics as the draw. In the summer of 2015, gun violence rose 54% in Washington, D.C. with many of the reported homicides emerging from the Anacostia area. In 2016, during the 5-week period of GOODCamp there were 0 homicides reported in the ANC-8A region where the camp was held. We were able to give an opportunity 2 youth who survived gun violence incidents prior to the camp and 56 youth who lived in hotspots where gun violence is prevalent.
